Food

The food sector includes the processing, storage and distribution of food raw materials and finished products, with a focus on strict hygiene and safety standards. Production often takes place in sterile environments, where it is necessary to meet cleanliness standards and ensure that process equipment meets high hygiene requirements. This sector is characterised by specific explosive atmospheres, particularly in areas where raw materials such as cereals, flour, sugar or starch are stored and handled, where fine combustible dusts can be generated. Dust hazards are most pronounced in the drying, milling and refining of agricultural products, where fine particles remain airborne and can create an explosive environment. Explosive atmospheres can also form in silos, filters and during the transport of bulk raw materials, requiring compliance with strict ATEX safety regulations for ZONE 1/21 and ZONE 2/22. A critical factor is the provision of decontamination to prevent contamination of foodstuffs with, for example, glass fragments or other foreign particles in the production process. Lighting in this sector must meet the most stringent requirements for cleanliness, washability and chemical resistance. The luminaires must have an IP69 rating, which ensures resistance to high pressure and hot washing, and be made of materials resistant to aggressive cleaning and disinfecting agents used in the food industry. The light sources must also meet hygiene standards, minimise the risk of hazardous particles escaping and provide uniform and good quality lighting for a safe working area. The use of EX luminaires certified for ATEX ZONE 1/21 and ZONE 2/22 is crucial in areas with explosive dusts and gases where sparks and ignition must be avoided. The combination of resistance to dust, moisture, chemicals and mechanical stress ensures that lighting technology in the food industry meets not only safety but also strict hygiene standards.
